Jackson County
Speedway Bonney and Meyer Get
First Wins Season Championship Night By Ed Potter (MAQUOKETA,
Iowa 8/23/08)- Point
Championships were decided in all six divisions of racing Saturday night at
Jackson County Speedway and the night saw two more new faces in victory
lane. One hundred and fifteen cars filled the pit area on a night when
car counts are usually down a little bit, as the races are started straight up,
with point leaders up front. The Crashed Cars .com 4 Stock feature got
off to a pretty rough start as Ricky Egan rolled his car on the front straight
away on the drop of the green. Ricky walked away uninjured. Brannon
Bechen grabbed the lead but Ricky Kay came from third to take over on a second
lap restart. On lap four Bechen moved back out front and one lap later
Kay pulled off the track with mechanical problems. Bechen insured his
point championship as he led the rest of the way and took his fifth win of the
year. Matt Montoya tried to run him down, but had to settle for second.
On his first visit to Jackson County Clayton Bicker came from his twenty-first
starting spot to take third. Jacob Ellithorpe was fourth as Leigh Poole
took fifth. Andy Wagener, Jeremy Campbell and Bechen took the heat wins. The
Bruce's Auto Body Hobby Stock feature had Neil Patchin taking the early
lead. On lap four Joe Bonney moved out front and held on for his first
win of the season. His winning finish was good enough to put him in a tie
with Patchin for the point championship, as Patchin retired from the race for a
fifteenth place finish. Eleventh place starter and first heat winner, Dan
Mohr took second with D.J. Fuller third. Second heat winner and
thirteenth place starter, Jeff Baker was fourth over Sheldon Hunter's fifth.
Mike McGarry won the other heat. Mitch Schmitz came from fifth to take the
lead of the Straight Pipes Plus Street Stock feature from Terry Rittmer on lap
three and never looked back as he took his fifth victory of the season. Cary
Brown moved into second on the seventh lap but had to settle for that spot as
he couldn't get to Schmitz. On the checkered flag lap third and fourth
place runners, Andrew Burk and Rittmer became entangled bringing out the
caution relegating them to the back of the lap. Burk was then
disqualified due to his pit crew’s actions in the infield following the
race. Kevin Brame was third with Klay Letcher's fourth place finish guaranteeing
him the point championship. Mark Claeys rounded out the top five.
Joe Bonney and Rittmer won the heat races. Kudos to Joe Bonney for
running two divisions in two different cars and finishing in the top five in
point in both divisions. Second
Pro Modified heat winner, Bob Dominacki took the lead of the feature and it looked
like his race even though Jon Bull moved into second on the seventh lap as was
putting the pressure on him. Dominacki was flying around the top side of
the track when all of the sudden on the white flag lap there was Tim Current on
the inside of him. On the last lap Current edged by to take his third
victory of the year. Dominaki's second place finish was good enough to
insure him of the point title. Tony VonDresky moved in to take third on
the white flag lap. Bull held on for fourth with third heat winner, John
Ahlers taking fifth. Ray Cox Jr won the other heat. Joe
Zrostlik and Terry Neal went into the night separated by one point for the
Obie's IMCA Late Model title. Neal won his heat race putting him ahead by
two points going into the feature. Zrostlik took the early lead, but on
lap four Neal went by. Zrostlik drove one great race but had to settle
for second as Neal went on for his third win this year. Neal won the
points championship by those three points gathered in the heat race. Mike
Garland was a strong third with Ryan Duhme fourth. Luke Merfeld came from
his sixteenth place starting spot to round out the top five. Hershel
Roberts took the other heat race win. In
the Hitching Post B Modified heat races point leader and Man On Fire, Chris
Stein suffered mechanical woes. Chris made a call to Davenport and had a
racing friend bring his car up so Chris could run the feature, relegating him
to a twentieth place starting spot instead of the pole. This happening
gave Kory Meyer the pole and he used it to his full advantage as he led flag to
flag for his first win this year. Rick Galloway was second followed by
Keith Feller, Matt Wilson and Steve Olson, in that order. Stein's seventh
place finish still gave him the point title with a good run in a car he had
never driven before. Galloway, Meyer and Johnny Walker were the heat race
winners. This coming Saturday will feature Cheater's races in all
divisions except the IMCA Late Model along with mechanics racing, powder puffs
and the always exciting Budweiser Night of Destruction trailer races. Results Crashedtoys.com
